Dear Midland Community:
I am writing to inform you and not to alarm you. The Midland District has been made aware of a circulating social media post referring to a school shooting threat referenced on a list. Fortunately, this list is a list of schools in the state of Georgia placed on a targeted list concerning ESSER funding. The Midland school on this list is located in Columbus, Georgia. However, this information has been shared with our school administration and local law enforcement. The safety and security of our students are our top priority, so we worked diligently with the Marshall County Sheriff's Department to investigate this report. However, upon investigation, it was deemed a false report, and likely part of a bigger trend that has been spread.
Please know that, in conjunction with local law enforcement, we will continue to monitor social media. There are no indications of any known threats to a Midland school outside of this “list of schools” post. I am sharing this notice out of an abundance of caution and as a precautionary measure.
Here are some key points about making good decisions and easing these concerning feelings:
Be sure to report any concerning message you hear or see in person or online to a trusted adult, school administration or staff member, or police.
Please do not promote social media rumors, instead, tell us.
